چکیده

The ability of blind people to navigate through unfamiliar environments cannot but make us wonder. It also leads to philosophical problems, which Descartes already captured: No doubt you have had the experience of walking over rough ground without a light, and fnding it necessary to use a stick in order to guide yourself. You may then have been able to notice that by means of this stick, you could feel the various objects situated around you, and that you could even tell whether there were trees or rocks, or sand, or water, or grass, or mud, or any other such thing. It is true that this kind of sensation is somewhat confused and obscure in those who do not have long practice with it. But consider it in those born blind, who have made use of it all their lives: with them, you will fnd it is so perfect and so exact, that one might almost say that they see with their hands, or that their stick is the organ of some sixth sense given to them in place of sight (Descartes, 1637/1985, p. 153).

Perception With Compensatory Devices: From Sensory Substitution to Sensorimotor Extension

Sensory substitution devices provide through an unusual sensory modality (the substituting modality, e.g., audition) access to features of the world that are normally accessed through another sensory modality (the substituted modality, e.g., vision). In this article, we address the question of which sensory modality the acquired perception belongs to. We have recourse to the four traditional cr...

Cross-sensory transfer of sensory-motor information: visuomotor learning affects performance on an audiomotor task, using sensory-substitution

Visual-to-auditory sensory-substitution devices allow users to perceive a visual image using sound. Using a motor-learning task, we found that new sensory-motor information was generalized across sensory modalities. We imposed a rotation when participants reached to visual targets, and found that not only seeing, but also hearing the location of targets via a sensory-substitution device resulte...

Cooperation between Visual and Inertial Information for 3d Vision

Advanced sensor systems, exploring high integrity and multiple sensor modalities, have been significantly increasing the capabilities of autonomous vehicles and enlarging the application potential of vision systems. The article describes the cooperation between two relevant sensors vision systems and inertial sensors. Vision and inertial sensing are two sensory modalities that can be explored t...

Vision and touch are automatically integrated for the perception of sequences of events.

The purpose of the present experiment was to investigate the integration of sequences of visual and tactile events. Subjects were presented with sequences of visual flashes and tactile taps simultaneously and instructed to count either the flashes (Session 1) or the taps (Session 2). The number of flashes could differ from the number of taps by +/-1. For both sessions, the perceived number of e...

Augmenting Interface Perception through Sensory Illusion

We believe in the potential of augmenting reality for increasing human perception to overcome shortcomings of interface technology, such as material, surface structure or form factor. Current interfaces, for example, displays and touch-based surfaces, do not provide same degree of information as human sensory, like vision and touch. As sensory illusion can result in perception of information th...
